Family Reunification

1. Human Rights Watch/ Immigration Equality, Family Unvalued: Discrimination, Denial, and the Fate of Binational Same Sex Couples under U.S. Law (2006).
"This report documents the crippling barriers such families face in pursuing a goal enshrined in America's founding document - happiness.  Those barriers center around a simple fact. With only rare exceptions, a heterosexual couple where one partner is foreign, one a U.S. citizen, can claim the right to enter the U.S. with a few strokes of a pen. They need not even marry: they need only show to a U.S. consulate abroad that they intend to do so and have met at least once before in their lives.  (Waivers of the latter rule are possible.) 2. National Immigration Forum, Immigration Backlogs are Separating American Families (January 2007).
"In our immigration law, our country has made it a priority for families to be together.  In recent years, however, growing backlogs in our immigration system, along with barriers to family  unification erected by laws passed in 1996, have kept families separated for many years, and in  some cases have split families apart." 3. Randy Capps and Katrina Fortuny, Immigration and Child and Family Policy, The Urban Institute and Child Trends Roundtable on Children in Low-Income Families (January 12, 2006).
"This report assesses how the changing demographics of the low-income child population are affecting child and family policies in the United States. The report draws on findings from more than a dozen studies commissioned under the Urban Institute’s Assessing the New Federalism project during the late 1990s and early  2000s."
